Vieira da Silva

On June 13, was born in Lisbon Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, the only daughter of Marcos Vieira da Silva and Maria do Céu da Silva Graça.


Death of her father in Leysin (Switzerland)


Studies music, although neglecting in behalf of painting will follow her for the rest of her life, draws with Emilia Santos Braga and painting with Armando Lucena, teacher at Escola das Belas Artes, in Lisbon. Has classes of modelling with Ruggiero Andrade.


Registers herself in anatomy, class given by the Medicine School to the Arts students.
Moves, with her mother to Alto de Sao Francisco, nr 3.


Goes to live to Paris, with her mother.
In Paris registers herself in the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where she attendant the sculpture class, by Bourdelle; here she meets Arpad Szenes.
First collective exhibition in France, “Exposition Annuelle des Beaux-Arts” from Société des Artists Français, in Grand Palais.


Studies in the Scandinavian academy with the sculptor Despiau.
Choosing painting instead, she abandons sculpture definitely, destroying many of her work.
Studies painting with Dufresne, Waroquier, Friez.


In February 22nd she marries with Hungarian painter Arpad Szenes, loosing her Portuguese nationality, and settled in Villa des Camélias.
Participates in the 1st Salão dos Independentes, in the Sociedade de Belas Artes in Lisbon, which is her first collective exhibition in Portugal.


Participates in the Salon d’Automne and in the Salon des Surindépendants.


Meets the gallery owner Jeanne Bucher which will have a crucial role in Vieira da Silva’s career.
Along with Arpad, Vieira da Silva attends the Bissière classes, at Academie Ranson.


António Pedro, writer, sculptor, and producer, organizes her first individual exhibition  in Lisbon, in UP gallery.Vieira and Arpad join the Amis du Monde group.
The couple leaves Paris and settles temporary in Portugal.


In January, in their studio, Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes, exposes their abstract paintings.
The newspaper Paris Soir begins the publications of “Madame la Grammaire”  with Pierre Guéguen texts and Vieira da Silva drawings.
They return to Paris in October.


In January, new exhibition in Jeanne Bucher’s Gallery. Hilla Rebay acquires a paint from Vieira for the Guggenheim collection.


The couple moves to the nr 51 of Bullevard Saint-Jacques, which serves as a residence and a studio.They become friends of Apel.les Fenosa.


Touch by the Spanish war, Vieira da Silva, Arpad Szenes and Étienne Hadju expose, with financial benefactors, at Jeanne Bucher gallery, in Paris.Due to the war, Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes decided to live in Portugal, where they stay for a year.


Vieira da Silva wins a window-shop contest in a cutler’ shop. In June, the couple leaves for Brazil.


Individual exhibition at Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro. Participation in the 48th Salão Nacional de Belas artes do Rio de Janeiro.


Decorates with glazed tiles the refectory room of escola Nacional de Agronomia, work which she called Kilomètre 44


Exhibits in the Gallery Askanasy in Rio de Janeiro.


Participates in Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris.Illustrates the gothic novel of the weekly Cruzeiro. With Arpad, participates in the Exhibition of modern Brazilian painting, in the British Council of Scotland.


Exhibits with Arpad Szenes in Palácio Municipal in Belo Horizonte.
The Marian Willards gallery presents her first individual exhibition in New York, organized by Jeanne Bucher.
Illustrates the Brazilian publication “Caderno da Juventude”, a collection of cultural and recreational texts.
Jeanne Bucher’s death (succeeded her in the gallery nephew Jean François Jaeger).


In March, Vieira da Silva returns alone to Françe, to the Boulevard Saint-Jacques. Exhibition in Jeanne Bucher’s gallery, with works from the Brazilian period. Pierre Loeb visits her studio and his interested in her work.


The French state acquires for the first time a piece by Vieira da Silva – “La Partie d’échecs”, from 1943. Makes friendship with Jean Bazaine. Guy Weelen contacts the couple for the first time.

Acquisition award at the 2nd biennale of the Museum de Arte Modern of São Paulo. Exhibition at the Março Gallery, Lisbon.  Changes her residence to the Hotel des Terrasse. Vieira meets René Char.


Collective exhibition at Kunsthalle of Basel. Wins tapestries contests, which were intended to the Basel University. Solo exhibition at the Cadby Birch Gallery, New York. Participates at the XXVIIª Venice Biennale. Starts a friendship with Manuel Cargaleiro. Guy Weelen becomes her agent.


Collective exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Amesterdam, with Germaine Richier. Solo exhibition at Pierre’s Gallery, in Paris. Wins the 3rd prize at Caracas Biennale. Exhibits at Março Gallery, in Lisbon.


Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes naturalize themselves French. They change address, to the Abbé Carton street, nr 34.Exhibits at Galleries du Perron, in Genebra, Gallery Dsaidenberg in New York, at Gallery Pórtico, in Lisbon and at Modern Art Gallery Marie-Suzanne Feigel, in Basel.


Solo exhibition in London, at Hanover Gallery.


The Kestner-Gesellschaft of Hanover held her first retrospective exhibition, presented later at Kunstverein de Bremen and at Kunst-und Museumverein from Wuppertal. Mention award at the annual prize by the Guggenheim Museum. 4th prize at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. Participates ate the Universal and International exhibition of Brussels.


Works in the prints to illustrate the L'Inclémence Lointaine, anthology of poems by René Char. Participates at II Documenta '59 by Cassel.


Receives the French decoration of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Collective exhibition at Gallery Jeanne-Bucher, in Paris, as a tribute to the gallery owner, followed by another individual exhibition.


L'Inclémence Lointaine is presented in Paris by the editor Pierre Berès. Exhibits at the Knoedler Gallery in New York, and the Duncan Phillips Collection in Washington. Is an honorary guest at the VIII Salon du Sud-Ouest in Montauban. Participates at the VIº Sao Paulo’s Biennale and receives the Grand Prix International Painting Biennale.


Retrospective exhibition at Städtische Kunsthalle in Mannheim. Receives, in Paris, the decoration Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.


The galleries Jeanne-Bucher, in Paris, Knoedler in New York and Phillips Collection in Washington, present Vieira da Silva’s tempers. Exhibition of L'Inclémence Lointaine in Gravura Gallery, Lisbon. The National Museum of Bezalel, in Jerusalem, presents the recorded work of the artist. Participates in the exhibition presented by the Gallery Jeanne-Bucher at the Premier Salon des Galleries Pilotes



Death of her mother. Exhibition at Alice Pauli Gallery, Lausanne. The Painting and Sculpture Museum of Grenoble and the Galleria Civica d' Arte Moderna do Museum Cívic of Turim present a retrospective of Maria Helena’s French works. Participates in the 3rd Documental Kassel.


Exhibits at the Albert Loeb Gallery, in New York. The Manufacture of Beauvais executes the first tapestry from the artist work.


Solo exhibition at the Gallery Knoedler in New York. The Academia dos Amadores de Música de Lisboa organizes an exhibition of prints from the Portuguese collections. Receives an order to execute stained-glasses for the Saint-Jacques Church in Reims. Receives the Grand Prix National des Art.


Exhibits at the Ratilly Castle, in Treigny, with the sculptor Étienne Martin. Solo exhibition at the Gallery Jeanne-Bucher, Paris. Participates in the 3rd Biennale International de la Tapisserie of Lausanne and in the  2nd Internationale der Zeichnung of Darmstadt. Participates in the jury of the École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.


The first stained-glasses made in collaboration with Charles Marq and Brigitte Simon,  are placed in the Saint-Jacques Church, at the South Chapel, east wing. The placement of the remaining glasses would take several decades, and was finally inaugurated in 1997. She is nominated Honorary Member of the  Grémio Literário de Lisboa.


Exhibits at the Comédie de la Loire in Tours, Gallery Jeanne-Bucher and in the Gallery Jacob in Paris. Retrospective organized by the Musée National d'Art Moderne of Paris, and also showed at the  Museum Boymans - van Beuningen of Rotterdam.



Retrospective at the Kunstnernes Hus de Oslo, in Kunsthalle of Basel and in the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian de Lisboa. Exhibits, in Lisbon, at Gallery 111, Judite da Cruz e São Mamede. Is named Daughter of Mark Twain, at United States of America.

Exhibition of the recorded work of Vieira da Silva in the Belas Artes Museum in Rouen and Thomas-Henry in Cherbourg. Exhibits prints in the Gallery Régence Michel Vokaer in Brussels and lithographs at the gallery Véga in Liège. Artist’s retrospective in the Museum Unterlinden in Colmar. Collective exhibition with Arpad Szenes at the gallery Judite da Cruz, in Lisbon. Illustrates an edition of the “Banquete” of Platão.


The Rizzoli Centre in Milan presents a group of paints of the artist. Retrospective exhibition at the Art and History Museum, in Orleans. The Maison the la Culture, Orleans presents, simultaneous, a selection of prints by the artist.



A major exhibition of paint is organized by the Gallery Artel, from Geneva. The gallery Quadrum from Lisbon presents a selection of prints. Exhibits at the museum of Belas Artes of Dijon "Deux volets de la Donation Granville: J.F. Millet e Vieira da Silva".



Exhibits with Arpad Szenes, at the 12th International Festival of Contemporary art of Royan. The New Gallery of Stockholm presents a number of recent tempers form Vieira da Silva. Exhibition of lithography’s and serigraphy’s from the artist at the Monique Delcourt Gallery, in Valenciennes and in the Framont  gallery, in Paris. Vieira’s prints are also presented in the Biblioteca-Museu Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira, as well as in an exhibition in Sweden. Requested by the poet and old friend Sophia de Mello Breyner, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva makes two posters published by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, to commemorate the 25th April of 1974.


The Maison des Arts et Loisirs de Sochaux, the Metz Museum, and the d'état  Luxembourg Museum  organized a retrospective of the artist work. Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes make an important donation to the National d'Art Moderne Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, which are exposed together with paintings and tapestries that belong to the French State.


The gallery Kutter presents, in Luxembourg, a group of tempers by the artist. The Museum d'Art Moderne de la Ville, Paris, organizes the first retrospective exhibition dedicated to the gouaches and tempers by Vieira, exhibition presented also in Lisbon, by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Exhibition of prints at La Gallery, Nîmes. Is decorated by the Portuguese government with the Grã-Cruz da Ordem de Sant’Iago de Espada.                                  


Print exhibition in Dreux, at the Chapelle grand' rue and in Holland, at  gallery Nieuwe Weg. The Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum de Aalborg (Dinmarc) dedicates an important retrospective to Vieira da Silva. The gallery São Mamede, in Lisbon, presents a selection of lithographs and serigraphy’s by Vieira. Exhibits at the Gallery jeanne-Buchers, Paris, with Louise Nevelson and Magdalena Abakanowicz, and in Gallery Ti-Kan, Locronan.


The Museum de Agen dedicates his summer exhibition to the recorded work of Vieira da Silva, also presented in different cultural centres, cultural places and libraries in the Paris region. Exhibition of serigraphy’s, prints and lithography’s by Vieira in the Gallery of the Municipal Centre of Argenteuil and in the Library Pierre et Marie Curie de Nanterre.



The gallery Joan Prats from barcelona and Nova Spectra in Haia, present a group pf gouaches and tempers vy the Portugese artist. The French cultural centre in Dakar, Senegal, by president Léopold Sedar Senghor request, present the work of Vieira da Silva, together with tapestry and paintings. Ilustrates with two serigraphies the collection of poems Méditerrannée from Sophia de Mello Breyner.


The Cluny Municipality (françe) organises during the summer, at the stables room in Saint-Hugues, an exhibition of paintings, prints and tapestries. The Ntional library of Paris organizes an retrospective of the work donated by Vieira da Silva. Collective exhibition by Vieira da Silva, Arpad and Étienne Hajdu at École des hautes études commerciales de Jouy-en-Josas.


The Gallery Jeanne-Bucher in Paris, exhibits a selection of work on papper,by Vieira da Silva. The Cooperativa Árvore (Oporto), in collaboration with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, exhibits some of the srtits prints. The National committee and the French Embassy in Tunis, presemt a group pf paintings and prints by Vieira da Silva at the Gallery de l'Information, Túnis.



The Rencontres d'Art du Quercy pay her homage presenting oils and tempers by the artist, at the Museum Ingres de Montauban. Is guest of honor of the XXVIII Salon des Beaux-Arts du Gâtinais, Montargis. The Museum of Belas –Artes of Bilbao, Spain, presents the work of Vieira da Silva. The Metropolitan of Lisbon order the decoration of the station Cidade Universitária. 


The gallery EMI- Valentim de Carvalho, in Lisbon, organizes the first exhibition of the work painted by the couple in the years 1930/1940. The French Cultural Centre of Rome organizes an exhibition dedicated to Vieira da Silva. The 1st Draw Biennealon Clermont-Ferrand presents some works of the artist.



Death of Arpad Szenes, at his attelier, on 16th january. The gallery 111, in Lisbon, organizes an exhibition of prints and gouaches by Vieira. Exhibits at the Belle Époque, in Lyon.


By the President Léopold Sédart Senghor request, Vieira makes three original prints to acompanie the book Elégie, dedicated to the memorie of the president’s soon. Exhibition at the gallery Jeanne-Bucher, Paris, where the book Elégie is presented. Retrospective exhibition of prints by Vieira da Silva, at Artcurial, Paris. Collective exhibition with Arpad Szenes at the gallery Nasoni, Oporto, with pictures of both artits by Ursula Zanger.



Exhibition at the Museum of Art, São Paulo, Brazil. Exhibition of Vieira and Arpad Szenes works at Gallery Bertrand, Lisbon.The Museum Granet de Aix-en-Provence presents, in the summer, an exhibition of Vieira and Arpad Szene’s painting, which is presented later in the cities of Angers and Cholet. Joint exhibition with Arpad Szenes, at the Museum Pétrarque, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. A selection of Vieira’s prints is presented in Bellac, Caen, Toulouse and Blagnac.



1988 – The Modern Art Centre of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques present in Lisbon and in Paris an important exhibition. The Museu Nacional do Traje, in Lisbon, organizes and exhibition of tapestries made from the works of the painter. The metropolitan station of Cidade Universidade is inaugurated.

The Lisbon Municipality gives her the Medal of the City. Is elected Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Is decorated by the Portuguese and French States.


The Serralves Foundation, in Oporto, organizes an exhibition that gathers the work of Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes in the Portuguese collections. Exhibition of Vieira’s prints at gallery Funchália, Madeira. Exhibition at Maison des Princes de Pérouges, Ain.
